did you try the softreset in the "setup" menu ?
i had to try it 5 times for the latest update...aahh i see : you wrote UP , but you have to push "Cursor UP"....

I think with Cursor UP it should be fine. It is actually impossible that the last firmware is more difficult to update. Just follow the steps and it must work.
Just some tips:
Press the buttons before you power up or right after the point you choosed for the software reset.
Hold these buttons until the bootloader is entered. If it gives a SD Card error (or any other error) then just hold the buttons. It will try again and mostly it's fine.
That should always work in all cases...check the new version number after startup so you are not searching for functions that aren't there yet.
