groove granularity
#1
Just got my  new Nerdseq today, and it's great.

After some time getting familiar with it and trying a few things out, I have a question - probably the first of many:

I've been playing with the groove column, and when I set up hi-hats as sixteenths, one per step, I can have them straight - so groove of '6' all the way down, but if I set the groove to 757575... to get some feel, the swing/shuffle is much heavier than I want. I'd want maybe 6.3,5.7,6.3,5.7... So is there a solution, or are there different solutions to this?

Thanks, Colin

OOh I love a challenge!

Okay so whilst not perfect, I found a bit of a workaround

In an unused pattern, just use the fx column to automate the BPM

Note that the BPM change happens at the end of each step, so you kinda do it upside down

eg

FX1 column_______FX2 column

BPM 007F
BPM 0096________BRK 0000

So with the BRK command in the FX column, you only need to edit the top 2 rows of the pattern. Obviously adjust BPMs to get the right level of shuffle.

And you can always set a track to double speed and double the groove values. I think you should get a higher resolution with this.

Thanks, I didn't think of that one. Seems annoying filling up a whole FX column. I assume this effects the global BPM, is that right?

Thanks, I did think of this but was hoping for something more flexible. I tried today, and to get close (still not quite subtle enough) to what I was after with a 120 BPM pattern, I had to go up to 480BPM with a centre groove setting of O, so +/- of P/N. This is kind of OK, but the maximum BPM is 500, so it's somewhat limiting - e.g. no 140 bpm stuff.

Might it be possible in some future version to have something like groove settings of W,X,Y & Z be user definable in project settings with a higher resolution? or is the resolution limit baked into the engine?

For now, I will experiment with using external clock, although I would really like to use Nerdseq as the master.

That's why it's good in a pattern you're not using; and if you use BRK command you only need to write it in the first 2 rows.

And yes it affects global BPM.

I do agree though, it's a workaround, and it would be nice to have a fine groove parameter. The way Pamela's New Workout deals with this is quite flexible; as you can choose the delay divisor and delay amount

No, i don’t mean double speed the main clock.
Set the track scale to *2 and double the groove amount (copy+paste is your friend)

Ah! I found it ( I think?) Smile thanks.
...go to sequencer page, highlight a pattern in a track, hit shift+nerd to go to the nerd menu, now change the 'TRACK CLOCK' setting from NORMAL to some multiplier, then edit the groove column?
This is much better.  I'd still ideally like finer granularity (like the WXYZ idea), but this is definitely usable.

Actually I tried this and I'm having trouble with it

If I make the track clock *2, and alternate the groove to be D, B, D, B etc (ie to get a milder swing), it doesn't seem to work whenever I start the pattern. However if I change it while it's playing, then it works.

What's going on here?

Do you get the same problem when using a sample track, or modular track?

OK thinking a bit deeper i think i understand as well the video and also why speed *2 will not work here. So my bad that i suggested it as a possible help.
To multiplicate i add several ticks to the regular main tick generation, which is totally legit for all sequencing, since all playing and triggering happens on the first tick. Doubling the groove then is not taking effect as the inserted ticks have the same timestamp as the regular ticks. So this is not helping.
I think the only 2 ways are currently using either the double amount of bpm and double the grooves, which some people do.
Or you get clocked external (24ppqn then) with a fine groove.
