Merge incoming MIDI messages
#1
Heart
Is it possible to allow for incoming MIDI messages on different/non-assigned MIDI channels to be output from the module? It seems crucial to allow for other MIDI-producing modules to be plugged at the MIDI input and have their messages also get sent at the output without having to assign their channel to a track on the NS.

Essentially, I think it could be useful to have MIDI streams merge.

In terms of UX, I would suggest an option to "Merge incoming MIDI messages Y/N ?". Whether this should be in SETUP or PROJECT is up for debate. Any channels assigned to something in NS should of course not be forwarded as they are being routed to the NS for a reason (unless said channel is set to record and the track allows to forward the incoming signal as per the current implementation). Any other channels should be forwarded if merging is allowed.

Is this something feasible or already planned for the future?

Hmm. If that gets implemented I guess I would like to see that as an optional feature. The reason is that depending on the (volume of the) incoming stream that may impact the MIDI timing of the stuff I'd like to send from the NerdSEQ.

No question about it! This should not be the default setting and it should be a Y/N option in the SETUP page, in my opinion. Not sure if it should be per PROJECT.
I edited the first post to clarify what my thinking is in terms of UX.

I do believe, with such an array of MIDI-capable modules in Euroland, that such a feature would be welcome.

This is easy possible. But every midi merge comes at a timing cost. So in general the use of midi-thru boxes is always recommended.
PLEASE use the search function if something have been asked or discussed before.
Every (unnessesary) forum support means less time to develop! But of course, i am here to help!  Smile

The timing cost is to be expected and it's fair for you to point it out, but on the other hand MIDI merging options aren't exactly in abundance in Eurorack form, whereas both MIDI sources and MIDI targets start becoming far more prevalent with each new module release. I assume that you meant to say MIDI-merge, as the use of a MIDI-Thru wouldn't be aiming at the same target. Being forced to add an additional box to a live setup just to be able to pass an additional MIDI message through the NerdSeq and affect the same MIDI channel (or any other channel) sounds like overkill. I fully understand there are downsides when merging MIDI messages, but I do believe it would be a good option to have it available for those occasions where it's useful.
Case in point, the VCMC allows me to control the NerdSeq, but I'd also like to extend some of the controls over to the Bitbox which the NS is already sequencing.

I'm curious though, has this request never been brought up before or is the timing disturbance so prevalent that you'd rather not allow for such an option at all? I'd fully understand hesitation if that were the case.
