so the rossum modules have a kind of screensaver mode, which was introduced I believe to extend the life of the screens (or maybe to prevent any kind of burn). should this be a consideration for the nerdseq, perhaps a mode that floats the xor cherries around at a dimmer brightness while idle after 'n' minutes?

Yes, it's in the current release candidate. Will be in the next stable firmware within 3 weeks.

I've found the din sync clock out becomes unstable when the screensaver kicks in. Also, we gotta have those cherries! Pretty please.

Actually the screensaver shouldn’t turn on at all when the sequencer is running.

With screensaver on, you have to hit a key before starting the sequencer via MIDI. If you don't wake it up first, it won't play, but will output a clock which is unstable.

I figured out already.
It will now release the screensaver by itself when the player starts playing triggered externally. Already in the latest RC5.
