Hi Michael, I see your point, and you're right concerning the scale or/and the mode discussions. Any major scale contains all 7 modes, or the other way around (any of the seven modes contains the other 6 modes, which in turn can be an Ionian major scale too).
As for the root note, I'd say if I understand correctly, that this could be important when quantifying .... I imagine the system/module needs to assume that the lowest note to be calculated is the root note of XXXX mode.
Lastly, if there's to be other altered modes, or more exotic scales included, then sometimes the root note is important. A simple example could be a diminished scale, which in jazz we use in different ways depending on if we start with the half step, or a whole step.
