Converted midi expander to 1U tile
#1
Hi,

I always found that the midi expander uses too much space. I recently moved my nerdseq into an intellijel palette case and ran out of space. However, I noticed that the case is deep enough to fit the midi expander below nerdseq.

I made a small 1U cover with 2 stereo 3.5mm jacks that are soldered to the expander. I guess the pictures are explaining everything but let me know in case you have any questions!

and finally everything put together:

Could you by any chance post photos of how you used the headers to connect to the midi jacks? And which headers did you use? Been wanting to do the same to my case

i'll try to remember to take photos, i just took pin 4 & 5 on in and out from the xor midi expander (soldered wires there) and followed this diagram from intellijel: https://forum.intellijel.com/t/7u-case-m...usable/462 ... right now the expander is just put in the case with doublesided foam adhesive... was going to desolder the dsub and the din connectors originally, but couldn't be bothered after initial testing ,D

Ended up doing it just now, the same way you did except I wrapped the module in bubble wrap. Works great, thanks so much for the help!!

This is a very neat solution. To solder on the back of the connections and keep the original pcb functioning if you would want to put it back again in the future, I like it!
I was thinking to do something similar but with a 2hp 3U panel, using TRS for the midi and then skipping on the gamepad port. Maybe even squeeze in a passive mult since there will be a lot of space left.
Nice detail as well to have them detachable via those extra sockets. Taking notes... Smile
